The University of Minnesota Duluth, also referred to as simply UMD, is a regional branch of the University of Minnesota System located in Duluth, which is a port city in the U.S. state of Minnesota that serves as the county seat of St. Louis County, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 90 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the fourth largest city in the state.
UMD was officially established as a normal school, in 1902, being granted with the university status in 1947, when it became part of the University of Minnesota system and adopted its current name. Today, the university has a total enrollment estimated at a number of more than 11 000 students, and offers 12 bachelor's degrees in 75 majors and graduate programs in 20 fields of study, including a a four-year College of Pharmacy program, a two-year program at the School of Medicine, and a Doctor of Education program.
UMD's athletic teams ar known as the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), in 6 men's and 8 women's varsity sports, including in the Division I Western Collegiate Hockey Association, for men's and women's hockey. Their distinctive colors are marron and gold and their mascot is a bulldog named Champ.
